While i do not necessarily agree with Garvey's pronouncements with regards to Selassie leaving Ethiopia when the Italians invaded, i have serious problems with the attempts by some to downplay the role of Garvey, while at the same time uplifting Selassie to the highest high. Though i think that they both made noteworthy contributions to African development, i do not see Selassie as having quite an understanding of the dynamics of racism as Garvey. Garvey was more connected to the grassroots African people.
It is not a matter of pitting Garvey against Selassie, but rather if ones examine why it is easier for some to accept the diplomatic, brown skinned Haile Selassie than the blunt, direct, blacker than black Garvey, some useful lessons will be learnt.
