As I understand it, Shaka was indeed despised as a child because his mother wasn't married to his father when he was born. But it was not taboo to marry or be sexually involved with someone from a different clan. In Zulu (or northern Nguni) culture it is the opposite. To marry someone from the same clan is considered incest.
