it could be that a lot of the biblical "historical accounts" were written long after the supposed events happened. think of it like trying to justify your existance by creating a false history for yourself using bits and pieces of some historical truths, some mythology from surrounding peoples and creating an amalgam which today is hard to decipher the reality from the fabrications.
i made a post a little bit ago about the Qement people of Abyssinia whose legends trace their forebearers being from Canaan along with the Beta Israel(Falasha). i do not think that all Hebrews were homogenous - if they are in fact a confederation of people then it would make sense that some of the indigenous Canannanites were brought into the Hebraic fold. i think perhaps the Beta Israel people and Qement could in fact be a remnant of the indigenous Canaanite peoples, some of whom were "Jews" and some who still held onto the older "pagan" beliefs of the indigenous Canaanites.
