i think that the second account gets to one of the truths of this issue, that marriage is, among other things, an economic alliance. In some situations it may make more practical sense to have unions of something other than the 'traditional' pair.

I also think, having spoken to a few people who have tried such arrangements out, that it would take a pretty special and very emotionally mature group to pull off polygamy successfully without it degenerating into a power struggle or festival of envy.

Things are hard enough with a single partner...

Still, as others have said, it is an individual choice and i would be the last person to stand in its way.
