i think perhaps you are confusing patience with inactivity, at least in my case. I would be approximately as useful as a bicycle is to a fish in the fight against HIV/aids. It isnt my field of expertise, and i would just be another clueless white guy making things worse rather than better.
On the other hand i do have some small knowledge of urban and regional planning, and in particular issues related to systems of communal land tenure and housing. This does have direct application to the empowerment of (for example) indigenous australians, and i am busily in the process of doing just that. It has taken me the better part of 10 years of effort and constant vigilance to get myself into this position however. If i had tried to 'help' before then it would have most likely been anything but. Now i at least a little more overstanding, a position of influence, access to resources, and the capacity to actually do something useful. I am by no means bragging, i actually hate talking about this sort of thing, actions being much, much louder than words.
