"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.
Other quotes:
"Black history is American history." Is there a white History month?"
The interviewer mayber Morley Safer, responded:
"I'm Jewish."
Freeman: "Is there a Jewish history month?"
Safer? "No, nor do I want one."
The problem with Black History Month is this.
The focus is too narrow. I agree 100% with Morgan Freeman. The History of Africans in America is American history. The perpetuation of the celebration indicates that "Blacks" in America have settled for the crumbs. African history is world history almost none of which is recognized during celebrations of Black History Month. African-Americans need to push for the history of Africans in America to be taught in every classroom, every school day of every year.
As an Afro-Caribbean I know a lot more about African-American history than African-Americans know about the history of Africans in the Caribbean and the rest of the Americas. I knew an African-American, college graduate who had never heard of Toussaint L'Overture.
