I'm not necessarily saying that Ethiopians and Somalis are not black. Just that there are ambiguities as to what defines "black". Many Ethiopians and Somalis (including some who I've met) do indeed strongly identify themselves as black. I once worked with a group of Somalis who didn't like being linked to the Arabs because they had experienced Arab racism while working in Arab countries. One of them was adamant that Somalis are black. On the other hand, some Somalis claim that the Somalis were originally an Arab tribe. And a Somali woman on another forum warned me that I risked having my eyes scratched out if I called Somalis "black"! Though having said that, many of her fellow Somalis on that forum identify themselves as black and proudly so. That's what I mean by ambiguity/ambivalence. Here is the link for that forum.
