Re: What is "Leadership"?
In Response To: What is "Leadership"? *NM* ()

We should take time to not only learn of the issues that affect us, but to also become truly revolutionary in terms of helping forward those who suffer in the system. Help should be without the intention of leading others, but allowing others to lead themselves. Helping people forward could simply be about reasoning these issues with others and reminding them that it is in their interest to learn of and articulate their concerns for themselves, alongside giving other legitimate help they may request.

While many who went before worked with what they understood and the urgency of the times they lived in, few people had the depth of understanding of the issues, and too few could have advanced the movement if the leader was killed or died naturally. Often the majority of people had a different sense of urgency, and sometimes they may not even have properly understood the arguments being made in their favour. Most may only know something is wrong and change is needed. The old habit of waiting for a hero, a saviour to liberate people, has to shift to encouraging people to become their own saviours (as they really are).

Encouraging those who suffer and desire help to learn and articulate the issues for themselves is developing liberators of people.

Getting a highly informed support base is the best security we can have in the drive to improve/change the system. It means the old status quo of selectively killing off leaders will have little effect on the momentum of a movement since there is an attitude that encourages all to be well-informed while being leaders themselves in their own right. We need leaders and flocks of shepherds; not a leader and a flock of sheep.

A shift in attitude is what will make the difference; one of service and not one of personal aggrandizement (I am not saying that all past leaders did that) is the way to go.

In my view, leadership must come from a better understanding of service.
