Re: Gods or Monsters?
In Response To: Gods or Monsters? ()

There is an old Yoruba song "Ma deniyan" - "I will become human." It speaks of a group of apes, watching humanity and deciding that what humans had they too would have. So, they decided to do whatever it took to become human.

There is a version of this song done by Sikiru Ayinde, I will locate it and I will transcribe the full lyrics.

Songs like this (and what are called ancestral myths) are usually based on some ancient experience. This was the sort of thing I was asking for when ones started talking about African albinos being driven into the caucus mountains or some other region at the bottom of the Earth. Such an event, had it ever happenned would have been recorded in some way. Such an apocalyptic occurence does not just dissappear from the communal memory. Either Africans would have records of it or, the ancestors of Europeans ancestors would.

The original myhs of Europe speak of theft (prometheus), incest (oedipus) and piracy (jason and the argonauts). In all thier ancestral myths, the ancestors of Europeans are described as what we would today recognise as criminals. Even adam and eve were said to have come to thier fate because they sinned.

However, most (if not all) ancestral crimes were given a 'noble' justification or, as in the case of oedipus, presented as something beyond the control of the protagonist.

Where can we find the myths of Europe that say "we were innocent victims" ?
