Title: `Got To Give It Up’ Ruling Against Robin Thicke Could Be Seen as Reparations Post by: Nakandi on March 11, 2015, 12:49:46 PM ‘Got To Give It Up’ Ruling Against Robin Thicke Could Be Seen as Reparations For Decades of Music Theft By White Artists
"Black music has been hijacked by white artists for decades, and so maybe the ruling that Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams have to pay Marvin Gaye’s estate $7.4 million is retroactive penance for so many unpunished bad acts of the past. From Elvis Presley to the Beach Boys to the Allen Brothers in the 1920s and on and on, music created by Black artists has been recorded and performed by whites who paid nothing for the privilege. This ruling on Gaye’s classic song, “Got To Give It Up,” cannot make up for the myriad past discretions. But many Black music fans view it as a nice start." http://atlantablackstar.com/2015/03/11/got-give-ruling-robin-thicke-seen-reparations-decades-music-theft-white-artist/ (http://atlantablackstar.com/2015/03/11/got-give-ruling-robin-thicke-seen-reparations-decades-music-theft-white-artist/) |
