The grouping of nations is a stark reminder of the colonial legacy for both the former colonies and an imperialistic misty past for the colonisers. According to the Wikipedia entry, since I last checked, the organisation has evolved into one that seeks to hold members accountable to basic good governance benchmarks, respect for human rights, and other goals that echo the millennium development goals. How does Adama's seeming backpeddaling sit with those that agitate for Africa's independence that demagogues like Jammeh or Amin with his expulsion of Asians or the current calls for withdrawal from the International Criminal Court; seek to expedite with their instantaneous Pan-African zeal? |
