Title: THe Devil on the Cross Post by: siger on February 09, 2007, 04:32:09 AM Not good at reviews;
But i believe this would be a book that appeals to many. The Devil on the Cross; a play by the Great Ngugi wa Thiongo. A friend of mine did it as literature study material, and told me to read it. It explores post-independence Kenya, portraying the current demise of African states. We see how the gains of freedom and independence (when the devil was put on the cross...) were failed by the subsequent corrupt and soulless african leaderships (the blood- and money- thirsty disciples of colonialism). Abt the Author: Ngugi wa Thiongo is no doubt one of Africa's most prolific writers, with scores of novels and plays to suit a hungry conscious mind. His passionate writing has one him many fans, and not a few haters as well. Forced into exile in the U.S., he is currently a Professor of English. My favourite quote from the afore-mentioned book: ".......the edifice of progress is erected upon the corpses of human beings." It is one of Ngugi`s books that I can readily recommend to anybody interested in African literature and post-independence challenges in Africa.
