Title: My Afro
Post by: Makini on May 13, 2012, 01:09:22 AM
My Afro

My afro stands up on my head,
A halo, a crown, living, not dead
Just as the lion has his emperor’s mane,
The black woolly hair of an Empress I proudly claim

My afro projects towards the sky
Beautiful strands, steady, free and high
Just as the statuesque falcon makes its definitive stance
My kinky African hair impresses from the first glance

My afro reaches up radiating positivity
Channelling, becoming, pouring out my ancestors’ energy
Like the power, strength and grace of a charcoal black horse
This Goddess stands independent, intrepid, boldly, a fiery force

My afro extends towards the stars
Helping me break free from society’s repressive physical and mental bars
Just as the snake is mysterious, potent and wise
My hair protects what is pregnant with a thirst for knowledge, a prominent yet hidden prize

My afro grows thick and tight and true
My armour, my force field from ones untrue
With the intensity akin to an inky black panther’s gaze
In it, my power, my Africanness, my womanness, my blackness, my beauty blazes

Thankyou Makini....I feel embraced by your words  and as a fellow African woman I applaud .I too wear my hair in Afro style  and it was not easy coming to that point, now that I have.....It feels good to know that there are other women who feel the strength and power that comes  with the acceptance of Self.I learn more and more of Self in my journey and  your words reflect it back to me.Thankyou Again!
