Smith was active in the Machinists union in Philadelphia in the early 1980s. Later, Smith staffed Philadelphia's Community Labor Alliance in the early '90s and the start-up of Jobs with Justice in 1999. After relocating to Fayetteville, NC, Smith co-initiated the formation of Fayetteville Peace with Justice in 2001.He received a Ph.D. in economics from Temple University in 1994, and his book The Cost of Privilege came out in February 2007.
