The Garifuna Heritage

The Garifuna Heritage looks at the efforts of contemporary Garifuna Society in Belize to preserve the language, music and dances, that have been with them in spite of their exile from the island of St. Vincent over 200 years ago.

Songs, music and dance are continuously present throughout this documentary that includes scenes from traditional Garifuna rituals and ceremonies such as the dugu (healing ceremony) and beluria (ninth night wake), as well as choreographed stage dances that rely on traditional Garifuna dances like the “Punta” for inspiration.

The Garifuna Heritage represents the audiovisual portion of the Garifuna Candidature File presented to the UNESCO World Heritage Center in Paris on December 31st, 2000 for consideration as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. On May 18, 2001 an International Jury in Paris bestowed this honor on the Garifuna Culture, thus recognizing and proclaiming the Garifuna language, music and dances as well as its spiritual values to be of outstanding universal value to all humanity.
