Are we afraid of ourselves?
Are we afraid of our African selves
because we know how powerful
we can all be?

Are you afraid that
when you remove
the chains and shackles
from our hands and feet
we'll be free to execute power
beyond  what we've been fed
and beyond what you've ever seen?

Are you afraid that
our freed hands would drum
and communicate with our ancestors
left in the Motherland?

Are you afraid that our unchained feet
would dance, and prance, and trample upon
what we see as oppression and discrimination,
and racism, and social injustice and fear?

Are you afraid that our freed hands
would be thrown up in infectious resistance
and revolution, and would clap
for what we see as TOTAL EMANCIPATION?

Are you afraid that our empowered,
non-conforming, mental faculties
would dream of, and realize
a deeper, more powerful role
for our African beings?

Are you afraid that
we will rise and champion
the cause of the 1970s?

Finally, are you afraid that
the grassroots would rise above oppression?
Is this your impression
of awarding freedom
to the AFRICAN?

We are more afraid of offending other people from other groups by embracing the self.
being accepted by others, instead of accepting ourselves.
