Johannesburg - One of South Africa's jazz legends Sipho Gumede died in Durban on Monday after a short illness, SABC news reported.
The managing director of Sheer Sounds, Don Gaile, has confirmed his death.
During his career Gumede performed with some of the music industry's big names including the late Brenda Fassie, Hugh Masekela, PJ Powers, Vicky Sampson and Abdullah Ibrahim.
He also toured the US, Canada and the Bahamas with Harry Belafonte and Letta Mbulu.
Gumede and Masekela, among others, also produced the musical Buwa which told the story of South African music in the context of South African history.
Speaking on Ukhozi FM earlier, Gaile said Gumede's death was a great loss to the nation.
