COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH CARE
AN ORIGINAL AFRICAN EXPERIENCE

*DID YOU KNOW?*

-The game of 'chess' or 'checkers' originates from an African healing device, designed to represent our chakras (different energy points and systems within the body) for Holistic treatments.

-Crystals are Holistic living forces. It has been used to treat dis-ease in ancient African cultures long before visitors mistook the therapeutic usage of the gems and used if for vain decoration. Today, Crystal Healing has become an effective Holistic therapy used by many.

-The concept of MIND-BODY-SPIRIT is the Holistic foundation of African civilisation. By using the connection to nature with the way of life, each aspect combined makes the WHOLE, representing WHOLEistic health care.

Complementary health care is also known to many as the following-Alternative medicine, Complementary therapies, Natural medicine and Natural healing.

It is a paradigm that has the intrinsic wisdom to yield nature to naturally heal. It understands the trilogy of the WHOLE person-Body, Mind and Spirit, and respects the fact that healing must in cooperate all three of these facets, each of which has an innate intelligence and an energy life force of its own.

Everything that you absorb determines the state of your cellular make-up - be it your food, your beliefs, the chemicals in the environment and our attitude in our daily life. It all contributes to YOU and your physical, mental and spiritual health.

With Complementary health, there is a huge amount of different therapies that use different aspects of nature to heal and cure. The main system is centred on building immunity, enhancing body functions and improving the mental and spiritual well-being.

A couple of scriptures from the traditional Christian bible come into mind:
"physician, heal thyself"

According to Obituary Statistics, the average lifespan for a Medical doctor is only 58 years, whereas the average lifespan for everyone else is 74.9 years.

Medical doctors today usually fall into one of three categories.

First, there are those who are more concerned with their own financial well-being and power than about your health.

Secondly, there are those who do sincerely care about health, but their education connected to health remedies in Medical School was limited to synthetic drugs or surgery.

The third category consists of those who have gone on to become Holistic oriented. These are the wonderful exceptions, and it would behoove you to find one in the latter category.

Orthodox medicine is always evolving and the public often pays the price for experimental techniques. Although the common perception is that Orthodox medicine is scientifically backed and more reliable than other forms of health care, the truth is 80 per cent of medical treatments in use today are not backed by scientific data.

Unlike Orthodox medicine, the Holistic practitioner uses the natural health scheme as part of their own health and Natural medicine has thousands of years of use as proof of its value.

All civilisations that had social intercourse with Africa copied its Holistic dynamics.

It is only now that modern science is bringing out evidence to prove what ancient Africa had known all along, its understandings of nature and its forces which until now, have been unexplained.

An example that I used earlier, is the energy system to which African medicine would treat the chakras of the body and Spirit. Modern science says that we live in a sea of energy where all matter is made up of vibrating particles and waves.

A German Physicist in the early 1900s named Ernest Lecher, invented the Lecher Antenna which worked on the principle of resonance. This instrument was later named as the ACMOS Lecher Antenna (ALA) and is now used as the main diagnostic device in measuring the human energy waves and its points. This is just an example of how complex the Holistic understanding of Africa really is. This was known all along and used for centuries.

Today, many of our devices, cosmetics and machinery is directly linked to the Holistic use of ancient African Holistic health. This in itself is a great achievement and shows us the true power of our own.

It is hard to ignore the tremendous growth of natural health care in recent years. According to the Herb Research Foundation, sales of herbs doubled from 1981 - 1991. Health clinics now offer alternative care nation-wide.

Today's health consumer is now fortunate because there are more options now available in both natural and orthodox health care than never before. It gives us the choice and has opened the pathway to being able to experience Complementary health.

As a result, Complementary health care is now benefiting people in bringing a whole new concept to our own daily lives, increasing our knowledge and awareness on how we, as individuals, can participate in our control over our health and our life.

Yet, after conducting a random sample of questions to random Black people regarding their views on Holistic medicine, I have realised the truth -- Black people do not want, or do not seem to understand the value of African health.

During the survey, I am surprised to report that I did not get one good or positive comment on natual medicine or its importance.

It makes me see how undervalued our knowledge is about our affect on modern living. If only those who took part really knew.

The question remains:
What went wrong?
