Local academic argues against reparations

An award winning Antiguan and Barbudan academic has been making the unpopular case against reparations for slavery.

Dr Nsaka Sesepkekiu says his first premise is that the victims and perpetrators of slavery are no longer alive today.

The local academic also challenged the version of history portrayed by Caribbean historians.

Dr Sesepekekiu also says a number of black Antiguans and Barbudans were among slave owners.

The academic argues there is no legal argument for reparations, as slavery was not illegal under international law at the time.

The former University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus tutor has received awards from UWI for several of his history papers.

The case made against reparations was not welcomed by many callers into Observer AM on Tuesday morning.

But some callers to Observer AM commended the academic for his boldness in challenging the case for reparations.
