I remember when we were children.
The first day of school and you had bobby pens in your hair, black skirt, black stockings, white blouse, and black shoes with the lace.
you were standing at the bus stop with a smile on your face.
Maybe we can ride the bus with white folk for the first time!
Our mothers and fathers so proud.
We are the future now!
The sun glisened off your face./and my suit reminds me of the train tracks.
(contemplating) You were the only girl I gave a lolipop who'd lick it and give it back.
(the bus arrives) Let's get on.
we wave at our folks goodbye./I sit down and you sit next to me.
giving one last look out our window of hope/ and then directing our eye's toward each other.
I can remember when you first moved here.(next to the candy store)
Now moma's gotta give me a penny! ''That will get me 5 pieces of bubble gum.''
I'll save two.
for the first time I see you playing double dutch with the new neighbor hood crew./I'll wait till your done hop scotching and hoola hoopin'.
approach and ask if you want some gum./you'll snatch at look sassy.
Meanwhile your girlfriends will poke fun.
Stacy's got a boyfriend;they continue to repeat.
I now were both shy, inside we contain a smile so sweet.
(At that moment when the bus arrives half post from the school)
you acknowledge that you were thinking the same as i were in a full... sMILE
NOW THE REALITY HITS AND POLICE,PARENTS,AND PICKETT SIGNS.expressing there hate for us all/and how we crossed there colored line. As i watch the tear fall from your eye's.
I remembered the pain and promised that i'd keep our hope alive. An always comfort you soul sister. I promised you'll be fine!
